UC Davis experts: Food security

The following University of California, Davis, faculty are available to comment on aspects of food security. For some, weekend contact information is indicated.

Food security

Interruptions in the national transportation system, such as those that followed the Sept. 11 attacks, raise questions about the stability of the country's food supply. William Lacy, UC Davis vice provost of university outreach and international programs, is also a professor of sociology in the Department of Human and Community Development. He is co-editor of the 1984 book "Food Security in the United States," which includes information on the "insecurity" of the U.S. food access, including chapters on household and supermarket food supplies and on the U.S. transportation system. Contact: William Lacy, University Outreach, (530) 752-6376, wblacy@ucdavis.edu.

Food-system stability

Gail Feenstra is a community food systems analyst with the UC Davis-based Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. She is the lead researcher on USDA and other grants studying community food security, including shopping at local farmers markets, the economic health of small regional farmers, and community food policy councils. She can discuss the possible implications of restrictions on air, train and other transport and the way they might affect access to food. More information is available on the UC SAREP Web site at http://www.sarep.ucdavis.edu. Contact: Gail Feenstra, UC SAREP, (530) 752-8664, gwfeenstra@ucdavis.edu.
