Media training workshops

UC Davis University Communications offers Media Training I and Advanced Media Training workshops. These sessions are customized for our scientists, faculty, staff and students.

Media Training I

General topics covered

  • Benefits and risks of working with the news media
  • Strategies for accommodating differing methods of print and broadcast journalists
  • What you should do when a reporter calls
  • Your rights in obtaining information before agreeing to an interview

Workshop day includes

  • A series of exercises to prepare for a successful interview
  • How you can develop strategic media messages and talking points for public presentations
  • Tips on general public speaking skills
  • Instructions for on-camera techniques during interviews
  • Public vs. protected information
  • How you can handle crisis communications

You will learn these techniques through a series of exercises, including critiqued on-camera interviews.

On-camera exercises will help you

  • Develop messages
  • Speak to groups
  • Handle aggressive interviews

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cost: $25, covers catered lunch, beverages and materials

Place: All workshops will be held in the Alumni and Visitors Center, Allewelt Room, unless otherwise noted. (*The Sept. 23 session will be held in the Founders Room.)

  • Lisa Lapin, assistant vice chancellor for University Communications, former News Service director, newspaper editor and reporter

Advanced Media Training

Using on-camera exercises, this three-hour program is for

  • Those who have completed the first workshop, and
  • Those seeking more practice with interviews and public speaking

  • Speaking to groups
  • Handling aggressive interviews

Time: 9 a.m. to noon
