How the News Service can help you

The News Service is the centralized office responsible for disseminating all campus news, with the exception of medical sciences (UC Davis Medical Center Public Affairs) and sports (Sports Information Office). Under the campus Policy and Procedures Manual, the News Service has been designated as the primary conveyor of campus news, the primary distributor of that news and the office responsible for media relations. We serve this function both for internal and external media audiences.

How you can help us serve the campus

Tap our communications expertise: Consider the News Service staff as consultants on the campus's internal and external communication needs. We can help identify audiences, determine the best way to get the word out, and target the most likely media for messages.

Leave the media relations to us: Our staff knows the media well (most of us began our careers there) and journalists rely heavily upon us. We are here to make media connections for you, whether it is setting up a meeting for top administrators, targeting key publications for a news release or calling a reporter to give them a story suggestion.

Help us get the word out:

  • Share your story ideas. We look to the campus to be our eyes and ears, and to bring to the surface story ideas we might otherwise miss. We are looking for compelling research, high-profile public service, can't miss events and simply good stories. We can help turn the best into press releases, Dateline features or "NewsWatch" broadcast segments.
  • Promote expertise. We regularly put together topical news source lists for media, on current topics ranging from earthquakes to black history. We welcome your suggestions.
  • If you have an informed faculty opinion, let's get it out there. Faculty members and deans make wonderful commentators, and they provide great opportunities to raise the visibility of schools or divisions. Compose Op Ed pieces on current affairs and newsworthy topics - opinion pieces, letters to the editor, commentaries and guest columns, or even radio editorials. We can help plan them and get them placed.

Enroll key folks in media training. Our full-day course has gotten rave reviews for more than 10 years, and helped over 600 faculty and staff learn the ropes. We will provide instruction in developing and communicating messages to your folks most likely to be dealing with TV or newspaper interviews.
