May 14, 2007

What: Brandishing colanders, cleavers and cutting boards, teams of food science students will converge for the sixth annual Culinary Combat at the University of California, Davis. The daylong event will include a culinary combat competition, food trivia contest, field events and food engineering contest. The public is welcome to attend as spectators.
When: 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19. Events will be staggered throughout the day.
Where: Department of Food Science and Technology, Cruess Hall courtyard, UC Davis
Who: Contestants will be graduate students from the Department of Food Science and Technology.
Visuals: Students will be whipping up original food items in the experimental kitchen using ingredients that were pre-selected and kept secret from the contestants. They also will participate in outdoor field events, a game show-style competition, and a food engineering competition during which they build structures with specific food items. (Events in past years have included tortilla-Frisbee catch, baguette-javelin throwing, food golf and bridge building with graham crackers.)
Background: The Culinary Combat, hosted by the Food Science Graduate Student Association (FSGSA) and the UC Davis Department of Food Science and Technology, brings together students, staff, faculty and the community for a day of food-focused events. Eight teams, each including four to eight members, will compete in the Culinary Commbat. The team that garners the highest total points during the daylong tournament will be declared the champion.
Directions and Parking: From Interstate 80, take Highway 113 north toward Woodland. Take the second exit, Russell Boulevard, and drive east (to the right) toward the main campus and town. Go about four blocks, then turn right onto California Avenue. Pass the student health center on your right. The next building on the right will be Cruess Hall. Park in Lot 20, just past Cruess Hall, or in the larger Lot 14 across the street. Parking on campus is free on weekends. The courtyard is adjacent to Lot 20
