Geologist to Calculate Disaster Potential From Delta Flood
October 4, 2005
Oct. 13, Thursday -- UC Davis geologist Jeffrey Mount will deliver "Hell and High Water in California's Own Delta" as part of a UC Davis fall-quarter series on natural disasters and their consequences. Sponsored by the Institute of Governmental Affairs, Mount will draw parallels between the hurricane disasters in the South and the California Central Valley's potential for an earthquake or storm to wreak considerable damage to valley levees. In the next 50 years, the valley has a two-in-three chance of suffering such a disaster, he says. Mount directs the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences and was, until late September, a member of the California State Reclamation Board. The lecture begins at noon in 360 Shields Library.
